ART OF CRIME//CRIME OF ART 8:

A Brush With Death – An Exhibition + Q&A with Priscilla Coleman (Courtroom Artist)

Thursday 1st December 2022

Their work is seen daily on TV and in newspapers, and their subjects can include anybody from serial killers to prime ministers. But who are they?

TWH track down and interview Priscilla Coleman, who has been drawing courtroom scenes for over 20 years, working for ITN and newspapers.

Although courtroom art is increasingly under threat, and currently being squeezed by transcripted re– enactments (on Sky) and 360–degree panoramic electronic simulations (ITN, BBC), these archaically handcrafted depictions have earned a place in the visual language of print and broadcast journalism.

Curiously, the main British television outlets have traditionally turned to women artists to bring us the news – darker and darker news, in the words of Don DeLillo, of a world of extreme anger and danger – from the back of the cave.

But is it art? TWH will seek to answer this question by delving into the history of this unique form of reportage with an exhibition and a Q&A with Priscilla.
